The Knights Speech Team took 19 events to Districts last week. Of that, 16 advanced to event finals, and 11 events have qualified for the State Tournament being held in Kearney on Thursday, March 21.

At the State, each competitor will perform their speech 3 times to see if they qualify for afternoon finals. A few events will be broadcast LIVE on the NFHS Network. To see a schedule of live events, click here. A live feed of the C1 / C2 awards ceremony will also be broadcast around 5pm

Please take a minute to wish your local Speech competitors, along with coaches Keri Hogue, Stephanie Smith and Marcus Manley, good luck as they travel to Kearney!

MINUTES
VILLAGE OF MURDOCK
MARCH 5, 2024

The Village Board of Trustees met in regular session on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. at the Village Hall. Roll call as follows; Jake Wilson, Dave Nuss, Michelle Chesnut, Lee Towle, and Clerk were present. Brittany Cooklin was absent.

The minutes from the previous February meeting were read and then on a motion made by Towle and second by Wilson were approved by a roll call vote all voting “aye”.

The following bills were approved by the Board members for payment: Windstream phone/int.-445.17; OPPD electricity-1091.33; Black Hills Energy gas serv.-529.58; Constellation Energy gas serv.-1739.64; Ashland Disposal garb.serv.-2864.97; Cass Co RWD#2 583,000 gals-3031.60; Cass Co RWD#2 read meters-373.00; St of NE PHE Lab wat test-15.00; Column Software PBC publishing-212.36; Best Buy Total tech renew-179.99; Stock Hay & Grain snow removal-1000.00; Lovell Excavating sewer jet/camera-700.00; J. Faubion postage/water operator-181.70; J. Barnes payroll-1187.42; J. Barnes postage reimburse-8.97; Frontier Co-op diesel-9.94; St of NE Dept of Revenue sales tax-114.55; (auto withdrawal)

Old business of repairing the pump at the old well site was briefly discussed but no further new
information has been obtained and again tabled. Ben Madsen attended the meeting to request information for proper placement of concrete pads for the garbage dumpsters behind the Grill so to be out of the way and easy access for pickup. The Board informed Madsen that 10ft from the center of the alley way was the property easement. Madsen will finalize the location for Board approval once his final location choice is established. Madsen also inquired about the location of designated Handicap Parking stalls with the possibility of trimming and tapering the top of the curb for easier wheelchair access. The Board requested accurate drawings to be approved before work is done.

Ben Madsen requested permission from the Village Board to allow Pickle Cards, Game of Skill and to have KENO available for play in Madsen’s Murdock Grill. Jake Wilson motioned to allow these games and Michelle Chesnut second the motion with all members present voting in favor or by RCV.

Melinda Kurtz from Utility Services attended the meeting to discuss a bid for preventative maintenance program for the painting and general upkeep of the water tower. An earlier bid from Viking Industrial Painting was compared and very comparable in price. The Board requested to have the initial painting amount be broken down into five-year increments instead of four to stretch the payments. A decision will be decided at a future meeting.

Charlie Wilson attended to submit a mowing bid for the 2024 season. Chesnut motioned to accept the bid and Lee Towle second All members voting in favor of the bid with Jake Wilson abstaining from voting. A Village Resident attended to obtain information about the process of having a propane tank installed for gas services. After much discussion, the resident’s final decision was to request natural gas service line from Black Hills Energy.

The recent snow removal process was revisited as a bill that had been submitted to the Board was denied payment as there was not a written or verbal agreement between the Board and remitter for the hours submitted. Partial payment for services rendered were discussed by the Board members, as two Board members had bills submitted directly to them with the same procedure already listed on the original bill. More information will be obtained before a decision is made to proceed with paying the claim.

An email from the High School was read requesting a copy of written agreement between the School and the Village Board for partial payment of routine yearly sewer jetting This was a verbal agreement years ago between past administrators of both parties with no written copy to be found. Dave Nuss discussed options with the school officials to help remedy this due to the extra flow coming from the school. Michelle Chesnut motioned to increase the monthly sewer rate for the School from $45.00 to $125.00, since there had not been an increase for the School in over 25 years. Jake Wilson second the motion and were in favor voting by RCV.

The sewer main line in the alley extending just west of Atlantic St. from Waverly to First Street was
inspected by a robotic camera. Approximately 70-90 ft. will need repaired. This work will be done as soon as possible.

A letter was read from the State Auditor stating the clerk did not complete all 8 hrs of continuing
education hours during the 2023 year. There, being no further business, motion was made by Towle and second by Chesnut that the meeting close and the next regular meeting will reconvene on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. at the Murdock Village Hall and it carried unanimously by RCV.
