A Flashback of Murdock History

A while back at one of our historical meetings the government bin site was mentioned, a few pictures were taken when some of the bins were removed. The big Quonset bins were hauled away by a house mover.

Some of the smaller round bins were moved by a trailer designed to back up to the bin then tilted back down to the trailer, then hauled to the farmer that bought them. The other small round bins were helicoptered out. These are the pictures of one that was flown out.

If you look closely at the third bin from the left there is a ladder leaning against it. Then at the top of the bin, you can see a dark sort of lump. That is the guy waiting for the helicopter to come in and pick up the bin.

The next photo shows the helicopter hovering over the bin. The guy is hooking the bin to the helicopter.

In the next photo, the helicopter rocked the bin to loosen it from the ground. The farmer that had bought the bin removed the metal floor from the inside and dug around the inside and outside of the bin, this helped loosen the bin, there wasn’t a cement floor. only a metal one.

The next photo shows the helicopter taking off with the bin.

The last is the bin and helicopter headed off to the bin's new home. This all happened very quickly. Most of the time spent was waiting for the guy to get down from the bin.

Thank you Bob and Marlene Rikili for the below information!

At age 19 ARTHUR RIKLI immigrated from Bled, Slovenia to Plattsmouth, NE where he worked for the railroad, met and married Margaretha Oehl. Two years later they moved to Murdock area where Arthur became both a businessman and farmer. He established a hardware store in Murdock, later a furniture store, and even started a mortuary in Murdock.

He and Margaretha eventually were able to purchase 80A of farmland, build the Rikli homestead and raised 12 children there.

The Rikli farmstead has seen five succeeding generations of the Rikli family owning OR residing on the property: Arthur and Margaretha, Leo and Edna, Dutch and Onneatta, Bob and Marlene (current owners) and Arthur's great great granddaughter Laura Rikli who lived in the original house for 5 years before it was taken down to make way for Laura's new home on the 80 acres, land now being farmed by Bob and his son Brad.

Bob Rikli is a great-grandson of Arthur and we live on Waverly Rd approx. 1/4 mile from the original Rikli family homestead. The other photo is a snapshot from 1897 of the Rikli homestead as it appeared in 1897 when Arthur and Margaretha lived there.
