Elmwood- Murdock Speech Team

EM speech 2022sm

The Elmwood-Murdock Speech Team has had a phenomenal season and now they’re sending 13 kids (7 events) to the State meet in Kearney!

Elmwood-Murdock hosted the C2-1 District meet on Friday, March 4. It was “all hands on deck,” as over 300 visitors were at the high school from 7am-7pm. Teachers, staff, administrators, parents, and even the speech team kids themselves worked hard to provide a clean, safe space where students from seven area schools could compete.

In the end, Elmwood-Murdock came out as C2-1 District Champions, beating second-place Freeman by over 100 points. The cherry on top of the sundae is that out of the 17 kids on the team, 16 made it to District finals (thus earning points for their team) and 13 are now going to State. Some EM students qualified in two different categories and will be double entered in Kearney this week. For those of you not familiar with Speech, that is an AMAZING accomplishment which will include running back and forth between two events in multiple locations at Kearney High School for 8 hours. Coaches Keri Hogue, Stephanie Smith and Marcus Manley are shy to take credit, but their enthusiasm and encouragement gave this team the tools they needed to succeed this season.

May the Luck o’ the Irish be with them on Thursday, March 17 as they compete at the NSAA State Meet in Kearney!

Glimpse into Murdock History

Meet the Gorthey family. I never knew them so can anyone give details on where they lived and a little about their life?

These are no ordinary photos, but COLOR photographs. In the 1950s this was almost unheard of then. It was cutting-edge "technology". Thank you to Ramona Oehlerking for the video/images.

Friday Team 2020

For the Love of The Game

Senior softball is alive and well in the Omaha/Council Bluffs area. Spring is just around the corner and the start of the senior softball is soon upon us. This year there are three senior leagues to choose from. The NE/IA Friday Morning Senior League (FMSL), Nebraska Senior Softball league and introducing a new senior league on Tuesday mornings.

The FMSL league is for men and women softball players over the age of 50 and has no upper age limit. The league started with two teams and has grown to eight teams. The FMSL league has a sign-up registration that starts in early spring and a player draft begins shortly after registration closes. Players will be drafted to a new team every year and the season lasts 20 weeks. For the players’ safety there are a few additional rules in senior softball.

The Nebraska Senior Softball league plays on Monday and Wednesday nights. The Nebraska Senior Softball league is also for men and women over 50, has additional rules, a sign-up registration and a player draft. Players on the Monday/Wednesday night league play on the drafted team for two years. The Monday/Wednesday night league has an American Division and National Division with seven teams in each division.

This spring, a new league was formed and will play on Tuesday mornings. The Tuesday league will follow the same rules as the Friday morning league except there will be two drafts – one at the beginning of the season and a second in the middle of the season. This will give players the opportunity to play with two different teams in one season.

All senior softball leagues will be played at the La Vista sports complex at 7629 Josephine Street, La Vista, NE. 68128.

Visual and Performing Arts Immersion Experience

Open Space for visual, performing arts expands with writing, speech; application is open

(Hastings, Nebraska) – Open Space for the Visual and Performing Arts immersion experience for high school students is expanding for it’s summer 2022 program to include creative writing and speech. The application for Open Space and additional details can be found at hastings.edu/openspace.

The immersion programs — one for visual arts and one for performing arts — will run concurrently Sunday, June 12 through Saturday, June 18, 2022, on the Hastings College campus. Creative writing and speech are both in the performing tract, although new electives this year will allow students to cross over into other disciplines and have a broader experience.

“Open Space is a wonderful opportunity for talented high school students, and we’re excited to be expanding even further this year to include creative writing and speech,” said Dr. Annette Vargas, Hastings College vice president of student access, enrollment and performance. “Open Space lets high school students gain many new and creative experiences and really shine as they grow in confidence in their talent and abilities. We simply love hosting them, and providing this opportunity.”

Open Space will accept a total of 80 students for 2022, with about 30 of those spots for a visual arts focus and 50 for a performing arts focus.

The visual arts track will accept high school students who are currently juniors and display a high level of artistic ability. Selected students will spend their week in the world-class Jackson Dinsdale Art Center to gain hands-on experience in a range of art mediums, from glassblowing to sculpture to drawing, and meet Hastings College faculty to discover future opportunities for careers in art.

Open Space for the Performing Arts accepts high school sophomores and juniors with exceptional talent and interest in pursuing music, theatre, creative writing and/or speech in college. This group will focus on advanced techniques and styles within a specific area of music (instrumental, piano, vocal), theatre (acting, technical theatre), creative writing and speech.

Students in both tracks will have the opportunity to rotate among electives, including interdisciplinary electives that give students the opportunity to experience and learn about multiple visual and performing arts areas.

Open Space for the Visual Arts and  Performing Arts is valued at more than $1,000, but the Jackson Dinsdale Endowment Fund at the Hastings College Foundation generously grants each student a $750 scholarship to attend, lowering the student commitment to $250. However, no student will be turned away due to finances, as additional assistance is available to families who qualify for the free and reduced lunch program.

Student applications require a letter of recommendation and an audition or portfolio.

The deadline to apply is April 1, 2022.

Hastings College is a four-year residential college that focuses on student academic and extracurricular achievement. Hastings’ student-centered initiatives include providing books, an iPad and a two-week study away experience at no additional cost. A block-style semester schedule allows professors and students to focus on fewer classes at a time and promotes hands-on experiences. Discover more at www.hastings.edu
