Take a Trip Down Memory Lane

Sent in by Marlene (Murdoch) Rikl

museum1019

Yes, I do remember riding my bicycle 60+ years ago down to the Murdock railroad depot to watch the trains come through. Dale Hendrickson was the depot agent who lived a block away from the depot at that time.

My neighbor, Judy (Trutna) Hendrix and I - both town girls, would ride our bikes down together to the depot in the early 1950s to watch the trains fly through, then go visit both our business owner Dads on Main Street in Murdock: Dick Trutna owned and operated a business south of the present museum for plumbing, excavating, etc.

My Dad, John Murdoch, owned and operated the Allis Chalmers implement shop where he sold farm implements - Allis tractors, Gleaner combines, plows,  discs etc and this white building is currently the Murdock museum.

Also, years ago in 1927, my maternal Great Grandfather, Henry Schlaphof, was killed by the train- the Rock Island "Flyer"- where the train crossed the Murdock spur that comes into town from the south.  The sun was setting in the west and neither Henry nor my Great-Grandma Augusta saw the 5:00 " "Flyer" approaching from the west.

Oxbowanimalhealth2008

Henry was killed instantly, Grandma was thrown out of the car and in shock, but she then moved into town from the grand two-story white frame farmhouse Henry had built west of Murdock when he and Augusta arrived from Hanover, Germany in the 1880s (former John and Pat Miller farm home at Oxbow)

Thanks, Marlene, I definitely learned something new. I will never drive around the Murdock spur again without thinking about this story.

Below is the cornerstone to the barn Henry Schlaphof built in 1901

Send me your stories if you remember the train coming through town at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

When is the museum open?

Saturday mornings or by appointment. This would be a great school trip or homeschool outing. Spread the word to your local organizations. It's a great little museum with a lot to see.

  Where is it?

South of the bank, the white building on the corner.

Every week I will have a photo from the museum, did you know we had an active railroad going through town, a general store, a barber and much more?

The Starry Knight parade happens at night. So how do you see the entries? Lights? Lights strung around tires, on floats. but lights with no extension cords. Battery-powered lights. Think about having an entry this year. Gather your groups, organization, or business and come up with something fun and imaginative.
