Market to Market is Coming to Murdock

This Saturday thousands of people will be coming through Murdock as they run from Omaha to Lincoln. It's a great opportunity to show our Murdock hospitality and show what a great community we have. It's fun to watch as teams dress in a theme with costumes.

Chief Standing Bear

I was fortunate to be able to attend the September 18th unveiling of the Chief Standing Bear statue in Statuary Hall at the United States Capitol. It was a great ceremony that highlighted the story of Ponca Chief Standing Bear, the center of an extraordinary historical Nebraska event in 1879, that affected the law throughout the United States.

In 2017, the Legislature passed LB 807 by 47-2, which authorized replacing the statue of William Jennings Bryan with one of Chief Standing Bear. The statue of Chief Standing Bear is as impressive as his story and represents Nebraska well. Here is his story…

Standing Bear was born in 1834 in northern Nebraska near the current town of Niobrara. He was a chief of the Ponca tribe, a peaceful nation of hunters and farmers. The Ponca tribe signed treaties with the U.S. Government in 1858 and 1865 to reserve their lands.

Later government treaties gave the Ponca lands to the Sioux Nation. The overlapping claims resulted in conflict between the Ponca and Sioux. To resolve the conflict, the federal government forced the Poncas in 1877 to re-locate to the Oklahoma Indian Territory. Many Ponca’s died on the 550-mile arduous journey, including Standing Bear’s daughter, Prairie Flower. Not long after they arrived, Standing Bear’s 16-year old son, Bear Shield, was dying. His final wish to his father was to be buried in the Ponca’s ancestral home in Nebraska.

To honor his son’s request, Standing Bear set out from the Indian Territory toward Nebraska in the winter of 1879, transporting his son’s body. Arriving in Nebraska, Standing Bear was arrested and detained at Fort Omaha, charged with leaving Indian Territory without permission.

General George R. Crook, commander of Fort Omaha, strongly believed that Standing Bear was being treated unjustly. He contacted an Omaha Herald journalist who helped enlist two attorneys, John L. Webster and A.J. Poppleton, to represent Standing Bear free of charge. They filed suit against the federal government for wrongfully detaining Standing Bear.

During this trial, the federal government argued that Standing Bear was neither a person nor a citizen under the law and thus had no standing to file a lawsuit. Rising to his feet, and extending his hand toward the judge, Standing Bear eloquently said, “That hand is not the color of yours, but if I pierce it, I shall feel pain. If you pierce your hand, you also feel pain. The blood that will flow from mine will be the same color as yours. I am a man. God made us both.”

In a landmark decision on May 12, 1879, judge Elmer Dundy ruled that Standing Bear was entitled to the same civil rights as any other person in the United States. The ruling affirmed the human dignity of Native Americans and upheld their right to equal treatment under the law. Standing Bear’s courage, dedication to his family and tribe, and an eloquent appeal for recognition of his basic human rights place him among the most remarkable people in Nebraska history. He went on to travel the United States promoting Native American rights.
