Murdock Country School

We had visitors to our old country school from the Nebraska Country School Association Conference on July 20th.

Some of you might recognize the lady in the bottom left of this picture. She taught grade school at Murdock several years ago. Mary Ann Gable was our first country school teacher when we opened 13 years ago.

Drone footage of Murdock taken the morning of the 4th of July parade. Lazado LLC, located in Lincoln Nebraska Lazado is a full-service drone repair and technology company. Nathan Hromanik, a 2007 graduate of Elmwood-Murdock brought the drone technology demonstration to Murdock.

Open Saturday afternoons during the summer and the first Sunday afternoon of the month. Take the kids, there is so much to see and learn.

If you would like to learn more about Murdock and learn more about the people who lived here, the businesses then visit the Murdock Historical Museum.

Every week I will have a photo from the museum, did you know we had an active railroad going through town, a general store, a barber and much more?

People are LOOKING for Sweet Corn!!

Do you have sweet corn? Bring it to the Elmwood park Saturday morning to the Farmers market.

Is your garden producing an overabundance of sweet corn, cucumbers, zucchini, tomatoes or anything else?

You don't need anything fancy. Heck, you don't even need a table. Just bring a chair to sit.

We have regulars who show up every week. People are asking for tomatoes, sweet corn, and other produce.

Pirate Summer at the Lofte!

The Lofte Community Theatre, located in Manley, NE, is having several Events this month!

Kicking off “Pirate Summer”, we will be hosting The Jolly Rogers, The Original Singing Pirates of the Midwest from Kansas City on Saturday, July 13th at 7 PM. The Jolly Rogers invites you to join in on the fun as they record their Lofte show for their 30th anniversary CD/DVD release! The Jolly Rogers is a ribald crew of singing-comedy pirates that have proudly been the source of first-rate maritime music for almost 30 years. Locals may remember The JR’s from their run at The Renaissance Faire of the Midlands at Iowa Western Community College (1991-2003). Break out your peg-legs and pirate outfits for a costume contest judged by The JR’s themselves! The Jolly Rogers rate their show a very light PG-13 due to suggestive dialog and heavy-handed and thinly-veiled innuendo. The JR’s are clever and naughty (like Benny Hill), not crass and dirty!

The Lofte will also have a Food and Beer Tent, called The Cutthroat Inn, every Saturday from July 13th to August 3rd. (July 13, 20, 27 and August 3rd) beginning at 4:30 PM. The Menu includes Brisket, Smoked Turkey Legs, BBQ Pulled Pork, Grilled Corn-on-the-Cob, plus special Pirate Rum Drinks and Craft Beer.

On July 20th, more Pirates will arrive and we will begin production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s, Pirates of Penzance. The Book and Lyrics by Sir William Schwenck Gilbert, and Music by Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan.

Set sail with this hilarious farce of sentimental pirates, bumbling policemen, dim-witted young lovers, and an eccentric Major-General. Our hopeful story follows young Frederic, an orphan who has mistakenly been apprenticed to a raucous band of pirates. He disavows the pirates' way of life and tries to win over the heart of Major-General Stanley's songbird daughter, Mabel. Complications arise that may prevent the budding romance and lead to the death of 'The very model of a modern Major-General.'

The Lofte cast of 30 actors includes Wade Mumford as The Pirate King, Piper Monson, who just returned from the Jimmy Awards on Broadway will play Mabel, Wendy Allen as Ruth, and Erik Quam as the Major General. Many new Born-in-a-Barn Players are joining the Lofte for the first time: John Celesky, Sam Bass, Jacob Goetz, Dillon Holsteen, Dillon Kirby, Matthew Kischer, Emanuel Meloy, John Kinney, Kameron Monahan, CeCe Hastreiter, Tammy Kruger, Gillian Pearson, Bobbie Ritzman, Kristan Robbins, and Leandra Rodriguez.

About The Lofte Community Theatre: The Lofte Community Theatre is a 501(c)3 non-profit community theatre, located in Manley Nebraska, approximately 25 miles south of Omaha. The theatre, a new post-and-beam style performing arts facility can seat approximately 330 patrons for each performance. Actors and audience members enjoy a beautiful climate-controlled venue year around. The Lofte offers a full concession stand, and also sells beer and wine. The theatre offers six core season productions each year as well as many special events featuring visiting artists including week-long children’s theater workshop, a free Veterans Day concert, and host high-school one-act play competitions in the fall. Approximately 12,000 visitors come through the doors annually.

Share Your Thoughts on the Costco Chicken Barns
Lincoln Premium Poultry is trying to bring four large chicken confinement barns with 65,000 chickens to Cass County.

These are Costco chicken barns which have been opposed in every other county they have targeted including Lancaster, Dodge, Washington, Colfax, Platte, Butler and Madison counties. The proposed site is three miles diagonally from Elmwood. If passed, this would be the largest animal confinement unit in Cass County – the size of six football fields full of chickens.

There are also other sites in Cass County being considered for other Costco barns.

The zoning commission will hold a public hearing at the Cass County Courthouse on Monday, August 12 at 7 p.m. Residents interested in sharing their opinions may attend the meeting in person or send an email to the zoning board at This email address is being protected from spambots.
