Do you wonder the origins of MURDOCK PRIDE?

One day in 2015 Linda Glantz drove down Main street of Murdock and wondered what impression Murdock would give to someone new to town. Truthfully, the town was looking a little neglected. Linda made a decision to make a change. She decided to do what she could to clean up the Main street and make it look inviting. In the fall she made scarecrows that were placed on the street corners and in front of buildings.

IMG 20171018 175943744

Each scarecrow was different and the gesture was appreciated. In the spring she put big planters out and filled them with flowers. She painted the light poles on the Main street. She put up Christmas trees for the holidays.

Murdocl smas 2017

She pulled weeds and swept up dirt. She had help along the way which she greatly appreciated.

Flash forward to 2018. Linda needs help! The scarecrows are a lot of work. Decorating Christmas trees all along Main street is very hard to do!

She decided to reach out to the community and see who would be interested in joining her in her mission. Kristy McHugh, a member of the Village Board, jumped at the suggestion. Soon a meeting was scheduled, flyers went up, and a facebook event was created. And people came.

They came and heard Linda's story about the beginning, about the scarecrows, the flowers, the Christmas trees, the lights, and everything she had accomplished. They came to hear what her plans were for the future. And they came to offer their help.

IMG 8812 403

The people of Murdock take care of their own. They take care of their town.

The movement that Linda Glantz started began as an idea to bring Main street of Murdock back to life and to remind people that Murdock is something to be proud of has done that and has brought people together.

Murdock Pride is alive and well!

(Thank you to Julie Anderson for this "outside" look in from an objective point of view. Yes, Murdock Pride is alive and well!)

Can a Splash Pad at the Murdock Park be in the Future?

SplashpadWhat do you think? The idea has been tossed out there.

The MURDOCK PRIDE group is now looking into the possibility.

There is funding assistance. The Murdock ballpark brings thousands of people each summer for ball games and this would be a fantastic way to improve our town.

GREAT IDEA for the MURDOCK PLAYGROUND!

It's been many many years since the playground set was built by the school. Over 25 years actually. There is grant money to build new parks in our communities.

Who thinks this would be a fit?

LINCOLN, Neb. — Grant money is available for recreation facilities hoping to add things like ballfields, splash pads and picnicking areas across Nebraska.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is accepting grant applications for parks and other outdoor recreation facilities and amenities promoting outdoor recreation.

The grants are funded by the Land and Water Conservation Fund, a program administered by the National Park Service for outdoor recreation projects. Eligible projects include, but are not limited to, ballfields, soccer fields, swimming pools, picnicking facilities, playgrounds, pool renovations, splash pads, park acquisitions and development, and park-related support facilities.

All projects must encourage outdoor recreation. Project sponsors must be a political subdivision, such as cities, county governments or Natural Resource Districts. The LWCF provides reimbursable matching grants for up to 50 percent of the project costs.

The LWCF was established by Congress in 1964 to ensure access to outdoor recreation resources for present and future generations and to provide money to governments to purchase land, water, and wetlands to benefit all. The primary source of revenue for the LWCF is from federal oil and gas leases on the Outer Continental Shelf.

Grant applications must be submitted by Sept. 7, 2018. Information and application materials are available at outdoornebraska.gov/lwcf.

Approved grants will be announced after the January Commission meeting. Contact Schuyler Sampson at 402-471-5283 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for more information.

2018 Fair Special Contests2 2018 Special Quilt Block rulesUpcoming dates spur request to fly and honor U.S. & Nebraska flags

image002 1image004 1

LINCOLN – Secretary of State John Gale says two approaching dates afford Nebraskans the privilege of flying their U.S. and Nebraska flags, with pride. The first occasion, National Flag Day, falls on June 14.

“The U.S. flag strongly represents and symbolizes the American values of freedom, liberty, and democracy,” Gale noted. “We sometimes take for granted the privileges we enjoy as citizens – but those flags serve as perfect reminders to our neighbors and the world.”

Just a few weeks after National Flag Day, Americans have the opportunity to fly their flags again on the Fourth of July.

“To me, Independence Day has always provided an opportunity to reflect on the heroic efforts of our military men and women and what their sacrifices have meant to our nation from the time of the Revolutionary War until now.”

Through the years, Gale has used both holidays as an opportunity to promote a free and popular service provided by his office.

“Every year hundreds of people send requests, along with their flags, to my office so that they can be flown over the State Capitol. The service is free. The only requirements are that a flag must be provided to the office, along with the information about when, why and for whom the flag should be flown.”

Those who wish to have a flag flown over the State Capitol should call 402-471-4070 for additional information. Flags are flown Monday through Friday, with the exception of holidays. Each flag is accompanied by a keepsake certificate signed by Gale detailing the date and purpose of the flight.

Work to Begin on N-63 Alvo North Realignment

March 15, 2018 (Lincoln, Neb.) — Weather permitting, work is scheduled to continue the week of March 19 on N-63, between Alvo and I-80, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.

Knife River, LLC of Sioux City, Iowa has the $11,758,926 contract. Work will include realignment of N‑63, culverts and box culverts, and wetland mitigation. This will be the second of two phases of work.

During this phase, N-63 will be closed to traffic from Reference Post 4+20 (Alvo) to Reference Post 9+68 (Church Road). A marked detour will be in place along I-80 to N-66 to N-50 to US-34 for southbound traffic and along US-34 to N-50 to N-66 to I-80 for northbound traffic. This portion of the project is anticipated to be completed in November 2018.

The Department’s project manager is Jesse De Los Santos of Lincoln. Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously through work zones and along detours.

Tobacco Education & Advocacy of the Midlands: Now is Your Time to Quit Tobacco

Bag the Butts for World No Tobacco Day

BtB Hickory Hill 12 previewPapillion, NE – May 31st, 2018 was World No Tobacco Day and Tobacco Education & Advocacy of the Midlands, along with 129 community volunteers “bagged the butts” in 17 playgrounds and parks in Cass and Sarpy County.

Cigarette waste is the #1 littered item on the planet. These butts are filled with cancer-causing chemicals that get into our soil, groundwater, lakes, streams, and playgrounds.

Volunteers picked up thousands of cigarette butts, dozens of chew containers/cigarette packs, and even an electronic cigarette. There were stark differences between park areas that have formal tobacco-free policies and those that don’t; with 7 cigarette butts being found in the Elmwood Park and hundreds at Walnut Creek in Papillion and Haworth Park in Bellevue.

Litter Gitters, a group of about 30 youth took part in the event. Jennelle Simon, the group founder, expressed her appreciation of the event, “I am glad the Litter Gitters were involved with T.E.A.M to clean up the cigarette butts. While they were picking up the park, they had a lot of pride about keeping their community clean. It also reinforced another negative impact of tobacco use and their commitment that they will never smoke or litter.”

Additional special thanks to Veridian Credit Union, Sarpy YMCA, Sarpy County Cooperative Head Start, Plattsmouth Chamber, Plattsmouth Community Center, CHI Health Midlands, Sarpy/Cass Health Department, and the Monster Hares 4-H Club for signing up teams.

For more information about Tobacco Free Parks, call Tobacco Education & Advocacy of the Midlands (T.E.A.M.) at 402.593.3022 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
