American Legion Post 247 Elmwood Cemetery Cross Project

In 2002 and 2003, the Legion worked diligently to make and place crosses at the grave of each veteran in the Elmwood Cemetery. This added to our already beautiful cemetery and shows the continual respect our community feels for our veterans. Unfortunately, the elements have not been kind to these crosses as they have cracked and some have even broken off. We now find many are beyond repair and must be replaced.
After talking with several fabricators over the past several months and tweaking the design, our first order of the new crosses has been received. They are made of a 1” thick solid PVC-type product that is used in place of teak on the decks of yachts, so should be able to withstand the weather of Nebraska – and they are beautiful! We designed them similar to the crosses in the American Battlefield Cemeteries in Europe and North Africa. The surface is slightly textured to resemble stone and the edges are all rounded.
Over the next few months, we will be removing the old crosses and cement and replacing them with new crosses. The crosses will be installed in an 8” column of concrete approximately 2 feet deep. The column needs to be kept high enough so the mowers don’t hit and damage the crosses.
This will be an approximately $12,000 project to complete. Thanks to a very generous donation, the 200 crosses needed have been ordered. Other generous donations have been received toward installation and removal expenses – cement, rebar, and circular tubes for the concrete, as well as extra crosses to have on reserve. We are continuing to accept donations toward the $3,500 still needed for installation of these crosses.
If you would like to help with this project either through funding or manual labor, please let us know.
If you would like to make a monetary donation, please make it out to American Legion Post 247, and send to

If you know of other families who have a veteran family member laid to rest in our cemetery, we would appreciate you passing this information on to them.

Christmas Trees on Main Street
Mark your calendars on Saturday, November 18th to meet at 10 AM at the Murdock Town Hall to help with Christmas in Murdock preparations.
Every effort will be made for each organization to be invited to send two volunteers from your group. Individuals are absolutely invited to participate as well.
"Many hands make light work” they say, as we need to move decorated Christmas trees across the street from the old fire barn to the vacant lot. They need to be zip tied to metal fence posts.
A few will have solar lights to be strung around the tree. Decorated empty gift boxes also need to come out of storage and be placed under trees.
Groups and individuals are once again invited to sponsor a flower planter to decorate for the season.
It can be something very simple to elaborate…your choice. It is absolutely necessary that items are secured in place due to the nasty wild wind whirling down the main street.
Be sure that it is something which is securely placed due to our strong winds which sweep down Main street. This can be also be done at your convenience the week before Thanksgiving.
If you wish to reserve a certain planter, please secure a note on that planter. Take down of Christmas trees and wreaths will be the Saturday following New Year’s Day. Seasonal planter decorations may be removed whenever the volunteer chooses.
The more, the merrier to get things done within a goal of an hour.
Let’s make Christmas in Murdock happen again by showing our MURDOCK PRIDE! Thank-you!

Last Sunday was the Annual Soup Supper and Creamy Potato, Chicken Noodle, and Chilli were served along with a large variety of pies. The young, from the VERY young helped out with serving and cleaning tables.

Meet baby Clara – named in honor of the founder of the American Red Cross, Clara Barton, and in recognition of the blood donors that helped save her father's life. Clara is the daughter of Brian Boyle, who nearly died in a car accident at the age of 18. He received 36 blood transfusions and 13 plasma treatments.
Following a long three-year recovery, Brian wanted to somehow pay it forward and became a Red Cross volunteer and blood donation ambassador. He’s volunteered more than 4,000 hours of service in support of the Red Cross mission.
This past February Brian became a Red Cross employee. He recalled, “The day before my first day of work I found out that my wife and I were having our first child, a daughter.”
Brian’s story has come full circle. "Getting married and seeing my daughter born would not have been able to happen without the love from my parents, support from many care providers and the blood from dozens of generous Red Cross blood donors who helped save my life.
Their blood gave me back my life, and it allowed me to give life."

Elmwood-Murdock Future Farmers of America (FFA) Program
During Kate Zakaras freshman year, she went to the now former superintendent Dan Novak to see if she could join an FFA chapter of a different school as Elmwood-Murdock school district didn't offer the program.

Kate started long distance learning ag class with Palmyra her sophomore year and joined their FFA program. In the spring she ran for FFA office and became the Sentinel and the very first FFA officer from Elmwood Murdock.

Over the summer she showed goats in FFA at Otoe County. In October Kate and Kylee Synovec attended the national convention in Indianapolis.

Mr. Malone (the Palmyra advisor) is going to try to help Elmwood-Murdock school district get nominated for the Monsanto rural agriculture education grant that they just received for $10,000. Palmyra ag will be using those funds for tower gardens. Elmwood Murdock may try to get the same grant for possibly a greenhouse but that is still in the very early discussion stages.
Kylee Synovec and Cloe Cooper are also in FFA this year and were last year and are taking the Ag classes. This is a great opportunity for our kids to get involved in the agriculture community. Be on the watch for different things in the Elmwood Murdock community and FFA.
Thanks to Kate Zakaras for sending the update on the FFA Program. She plans on majoring in agribusiness and minoring in vet tech.

Sunday, November 12, 2017
The Lofte Community Theatre in Manley announces it will hold a free Veterans Day concert honoring all who have served our country. The concert will take place on Sunday, November 12 at 2 pm.
The concert will include patriotic song selections performed by the Southeast Nebraska Community Band. The SENCB is made up of individuals from 11 different counties throughout Nebraska. Some members have their roots playing with military bands in the Army or Air Force. Others are former music teachers while still others just have a love of performing.
Veterans Day traces its roots to the end of World War I which ended on November 11, 1918. The official name was changed from Armistice Day to Veterans Day in 1954. While Memorial Day honors those who died during their military service, Veterans Day honors all current and past U.S. military veterans.
This is an amazing event that will honor all Veterans who have served our country. Bring your friends and family. This is an inspirational event best enjoyed with a large group.
