Murdock Pride Shows on Main Street in Murdock!
MURDOCK PRIDE was created last spring when Linda Glantz looked at downtown Murdock and saw the need to improve its appearance. The 125th town birthday on the July 4th weekend prompted the initiation of this project so ideas began developing. Murdock Town Board gave their support so calls were made to organizations and individuals who responded by donating flower tub planters, bricks, curtain rods, paint and, most importantly, their time and talent. Soon planters were in place at intersections and beyond filled with red and white petunias surrounding spike plants…most didn’t spike. 4-Hers and their families painted fire hydrants around town. Firefighters and Town Board members sprayed for weeds and insects as well as cleared the accumulated sand/dirt from streets and sidewalks. Businesses were contacted for permission to scrape and repaint parts of their buildings. Soon a new sign appeared in the Town Hall building along with new curtains and a patriotic bunting. By Independence Day, small flags were in the flower planters as well as previous flags and banners proudly displayed along the main street for many viewing the traditional parade and celebration. All this happened because of those who showed their MURDOCK PRIDE through financial donation, volunteerism and love of community.
As fall approached and the flower planters needed less attention, MURDOCK PRIDE thoughts of autumn sparked a theme of scarecrows downtown. With Town Board support, the word was out and groups and individuals responded to the delight of all who come to visit Murdock. They will be on display from the first Sunday of October to the first Sunday of November. Little scarecrows now are the center of attention in each flower planter. Driving through Murdock will surely bring a smile viewing these creative scarecrows.
In the future, volunteers will be needed to help (labor not financially) with replacing old Christmas light bulbs on wreaths. Watch for date and time to be announced later. It is hoped that each flower planter will be replaced with seasonal decor as simple as some artificial greenery and poinsettias. But creativity is encouraged. So please be thinking of which planter you’d like to sponsor and how you’d like to transform it to show Christmas spirit and your MURDOCK PRIDE. Watch for a sign-up sheet in the post office at a later date.
Finally, they say that “It takes a village to raise a child” and "It takes a village to care for a village” so everyone is encouraged to help as they can by showing their community pride participation. Financial donations to continue these improvements (especially the spring flower purchases) may be made to the MURDOCK PRIDE account at Corn Grower’s State Bank. All participants supporting MURDOCK PRIDE are appreciated!
A special thank you to Linda Glanz for all of her work on this project and for answering my request for news. She has really outdone her self!
