Just When You Think You Have A Plan...

 1 Zach and Naichel

On May 30th, 2015, Zach Stander of Murdock had reached a point in his life where everything was going along just perfectly…he owned his own trucking company, he had a beautiful fiancée, he had great friends and family, and he loved to enjoy life. But then Life happened.   While on a trip to Oklahoma to ride 4 wheelers there was an accident. Among other injuries Zach’s back was broken and he was permanently paralyzed. He has full use of his arms and upper body though.   Family and friends rushed in to support Zach and each other as he went through the initial shock and beginning stages of recovery in Oklahoma. His parents, Gary and Tycha Stander, were with him constantly as were their friends. His brother, Colt, flew in from California to add support. And his beautiful fiancée, Naichel Durham, never left his side. She was his rock.

Zach was transferred to Craig Hospital in Engleton, Colorado for rehabilitation services. He began to learn new ways to do what he used to do without thinking. He learned how to take care of his body to avoid muscle strains; how to transfer from his wheelchair to a couch…and back; how to shower and get dressed; how to go up and down stairs if there is no other way. Basically he is learning how to adapt to a world that has changed for him. He no longer takes anything for granted. For as much as we think the world is handicapped accessible when you are in a wheelchair you know that there are many ways that it could be better.

Zach has to pass a test in each area before he can come home. At this time he is wearing a “shell” around his midsection to provide support but that will come off which will give him a bit more freedom to move. Naichel, Tycha, and Gary are learning right along with Zach. From day one their focus has been to support Zach in his recovery and prepare for his return. While his house is being renovated to be handicapped accessible he and Naichel will live with Zach’s parents…so their house is being adjusted also. Naichel’s truck has been modified so the passenger seat is automated to come out and lower and allow Zach to get on and ride back into the truck. His vehicle will be modified also so he can drive. Since he farms with his dad they will make a lift to get him into the combine so he can continue that work. The family has received donations of handicapped accessible equipment which has helped immensely.

It has never been a matter of, “Can we do it?” but a matter of, “How and when can we get this done?” The people that they have met along the way have helped to foster that attitude. Life does not stop because you are in a wheelchair. It changes but it is not impossible. Zach’s attitude is to move forward and get back to doing what he loves to do. Nothing is going to get this guy down. It didn’t take him long to figure out that he was going to be able to get back to life. Not life as it was but life that he appreciates even more because he knows how quickly it can be taken away. With the love and support of his family and friends…and of course, his beautiful fiancée, Zach is coming back…back from the edge and here to stay.
