Job Opening at John G. Neihardt State Historic Site
The Neihardt Foundation is accepting applications for the Executive Director position at the John G. Neihardt State Historic Site in Bancroft, Nebraska. Author of Black Elk Speaks and numerous other works of prose and poetry, John Neihardt is the Poet Laureate in Perpetuity of Nebraska. To commemorate his life and work, the John G. Neihardt State Historic Site was established on the site of his former home in Bancroft. The Neihardt Site, now under the management of the Neihardt Foundation, is a branch museum of the Nebraska State Historical Society. The Foundation maintains a museum and library of works by and about Neihardt. It conducts a variety of programs designed to educate the general public using the literary and thematic legacy of John Neihardt to preserve the heritage of the Great Plains and its many voices. The position requires a number of varied interests and skills, particularly in education, literature, and the history and cultures of the Great Plains as the museum’s focus. The director will coordinate and oversee all operations and programming at the Site, supervise paid staff, work with the Board of Directors to ensure the financial health of the organization, and will monitor and report progress to the Board and to the Nebraska State Historical Society on a regular basis.
