Career Academy Students Do A Great Job

Front Row (L-R) Megan Schmale, Greg Stille, Austin Zimmerman, Heather Lancaster, Back Row (L-R) Kimberly Bracken, Alyssa Brown, Jordan Bowman, Lizzy Pegler, Brandy Kitrell.
This is Elmwood-Murdock’s inaugural year to offer SENCAP (Southeast Nebraska Career Academy Partnership) Career Academy classes to our seniors. Our first semester was a huge success! These nine students earned tuition free college credit from Southeast Community College and high school credit from Elmwood- Murdock high school. The college credit our seniors earn is transferable to all Nebraska colleges and universities.
Megan Schmale participated in the Education Academy taking Introduction to Early Childhood from Southeast CC and completing the pre-school lab requirement at Elmwood-Murdock Elementary.
Jordan Bowman, Kimberly Bracken, Alyssa Brown, Brandy Kitrell, Heather Lancaster, Lizzy Pegler, Greg Stille and Austin Zimmerman participated in the Health Science Academy taking Medical Terminology I from Southeast CC.
Our own Supt. Dan Novak serves on the SENCAP board of directors and has been instrumental in bringing this program to our school. Academies are partnerships between Southeast CC and area schools. Our students had the opportunity to initiate entrance into the college world and see if they could manage college curriculum. They also gained tremendous insight into possible careers by participating in the numerous enrichment activities offered through the career academies Elmwood-Murdock offered. Some of those activities included a “Big Event Day” at Southeast CC and a trip to the Lincoln Children’s Museum for Education Academy students.
Highlights for the Health Science students were trips to the UNK Career Fair in Kearney and the Madonna Rehabilitative Hospital in Lincoln. Our students also had the opportunity to network with students from Norris, Waverly/Ashland and Weeping Water as they attended these functions designed for them.
SENCAP currently offers other academies in agriculture, information technology, business, marketing and management, and welding/industrial manufacturing.
Next semester our students will be taking the Southeast CC class, Introduction to Sociology. This is an on-line course giving our seniors valuable experience with a new delivery format for curriculum, and with the time management demands that come with independent learning through on-line classes before they go to college.
Again, this opportunity is offered tuition free through the Career Academy. We would encourage our future seniors to take advantage of this tremendous opportunity.
Celebrating 100 Days of School
Kindergarten and 1st grade moved and sang to 3 different 100 days of school songs. They also identified words within those songs that detailed what they have learned about in those 100 days. The Students counted to 100 by ones, fives, tens. They wrote by ones to 100. Then wrote sentences about what they could eat 100 of and what they would not eat 100 of. The class did 100 chart puzzles and played bingo with numbers to 100. Each person brought in 100 items for show and share and each person brought in 100 items. Kindergarten had a 100 day snack that we put altogether in a big tub and they pretended to have 100 day soup!
