Big Changes Down at the Bank!

The Corn Growers State Bank in Murdock held an open house Friday to give people an opportunity to tour the new addition.  The remodeling is done and it was time to show it off.  With the addition of the space in the back of the bank they were able to spread out so they were no longer crowded into the smaller building.  The front part of the building is primarily for banking services while the rear of the building houses the legal offices.  The new addition houses offices and a conference room.  A room was created for computer equipment which is very loud and also requires its own ventilation system.  The old conference room became a break room for the employees.  An additional bathroom was a great thing.  The whole building is very beautifully decorated and has a warm welcoming feeling.  If you get an opportunity to stop in please do!  They would love to show you around.

FOOD DRIVE

We will again be collecting non-perishable food items for our local food pantry.  We are asking that students bring the food items between November 28 and December 16.  If each building brings 2500 of the requested food items for a total of 5000, we will dismiss early at 1:15 p.m. for the elementary and 1:30 p.m. for the jr/sr. high school on December 22, 2011.  Students may also bring money that will count as 3 items for a dollar.

Food items that will count towards the total are: canned fruits, canned vegetables, cereal, rice, pasta, and paper products.  Please consider donating food.  Our local food pantry has a great need.

The Elementary Student Council is sponsoring a challenge to help promote the food drive.  Each class is challenged to bring in 250 of the requested food items.  Classes who achieve their goal will get to have a dress up day on December 22nd.  Each class will get to choose their own theme.  We are accepting items now through December 16th

CANDY FOR COATS

The Elmwood Murdock Elementary Student Council is organizing a drive for winter coats called “Candy for Coats”.  Students are encouraged to bring in any gently worn winter coats for donation, and in return, they will receive a candy bar.  The donated coats will be kept in the office and will be available to any child who needs a winter coat.  Students can visit the office to “pick out a winter coat” at no cost, before or after school.

The coat drive will begin on December 12, 2011 and will end on January 20, 2012.  Any coats that remain after the conclusion of the project will be donated to Goodwill.  Thank you in advance for your participation in this project.  Hopefully, we will be able to assist in warming the lives of others this holiday season!!

FOOD ALLERGIES

We have had some students identified in our school with peanut and tree nut allergies.  We have sent letters home to the classroom parents explaining the allergies and the kinds of treats/foods the students can and can not have.  We have also identified some areas in our lunchroom that are peanut and tree nut free.  We are also eliminating peanuts and tree nuts from our school menu.

A food allergy is an immune system response to a food that the body mistakenly believes is harmful.  Although an individual could be allergic to any food, such as fruits, vegetables, and meats, there are eight foods that account for 90% of all food-allergic reactions.  These are milk, egg, peanut, tree nut, fish, shellfish, soy, and wheat.

A small amount of the offending substance triggers the reactions, which commonly occur in the respiratory tract, digestive system or skin in the form of a rash.

A more severe reaction to the allergen that is life threatening is an anaphylactic reaction. Anaphylaxis is a sudden severe, potentially fatal, systemic allergic reaction that can involve various areas of the body (such as the respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, and cardiovascular system.)  Often students with peanut or tree nut allergies can go into anaphylactic shock from ingesting any form of peanut or tree nut product.  Some students have such a severe reaction that just breathing in peanut or tree nut dust can cause a reaction.

Due to these concerns and the potential of other food borne diseases or allergens, we are directing parents not to send homemade treats to school.  All snacks and treats must be unopened store bought items.  If fresh fruit or vegetables are brought as a snack, please do not prepare or cut at home.  We also encourage parents not to bring peanuts or tree nuts as snacks.  These restrictions include treats and foods for birthdays and other parties.

Bakeries such a Eileen’s in Lincoln can not guarantee their products to be nut free because of cross contamination.  Please check with the bakery before items are brought to school for students.

Parents may bring baked items for activities that are not during the school day.  These activities would include soup suppers, concessions, or other activities that are hosted outside of the regular school day.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

S.O.S. Minutes-December 1, 2011

Present (6): Bruce Friedrich, Karey Koehn, Teresa Hawks, Theresa Hansen, Amy Rikli, Erin Clymer

President Karey Koehn opened the meeting.  Minutes were reviewed and approved.  No treasurer’s report was available at this time.

Agenda Items Discussed

SOS Secretary Resignation – Due to time commitment conflicts, Tricia Mommens is unable to fulfill secretary responsibilities this year, so needed to resign.  Theresa Hansen will take over this position for the remainder of the year.

SOS Scholarship – Confirmed the amount of the scholarship will be $250.  It was also discussed to change when and to whom it will be paid.  Scholarship will now be paid upon enrollment of the recipient and will be paid directly to the college.

Elementary Art Program – Bruce indicated this has been going great.  The teachers and students are very impressed with Mrs. Matthews.  The kids have been making positive comments and their work is being displayed around the school.  Generally, art classes are held twice a week on Wednesdays and Fridays.  Bruce wants this to be considered for funding for next year.  It was discussed we may be able to do additional fundraisers to support the art program.

New Shelving – New shelving has arrived and has been placed in the science/art room storage area.

Flowers - will be provided for Mrs. Colbert and Mr. Hanson for the winter concert.

Spring Carnival Date Reserved  - Carnival has been scheduled for Friday, April 13, 2012.  Games need to be picked and a packet was supposed to be provided.  Erin Clymer will follow up with this.

Other Carnival items discussed:

·         Karey and Teresa will work on a letter which can be sent to potential donors.

·         If any parents work or frequent places where donations may be possible, please contact an SOS member.  We can either contact them or if the parent is able to do this, a letter can be provided to use when asking for the donation.

·         We will do a cake contest again this year.  Winners will be placed on the silent auction table.  Other entries will go for the cake walk.

·         Karey indicated the 6th graders did tattoos and hair spray last year for a carnival activity.  This went over very well, but will need more hair spray to use.

·         A few new ideas for silent auction were discussed at the November meeting.  Theresa Hansen will bring the full list we had to choose from last year to review at the January meeting.

·         Susan Marlatt had bought items to be used as SOS raffle prizes for the carnival.  They are really good, so you better start saving your pennies for your raffle tickets now J

Parents for School Calendar Committee - A meeting will be held Wednesday, January 18th in Murdock at 7 pm.  If anyone is interested in helping to discuss the 2012-2013 school calendar, contact Bruce.

Open Concession Date - Saturday, December 17 - 7:15 to 3.  Middle School BB tournament.  SOS agreed to work concessions for this tournament for an additional fund raiser.  We will be looking for volunteers to help out on a shift from 7:15 - 11 or 11- 3.

Miscellaneous.

·         Mrs. Oliva turned in receipts for $215 from Family Reading Night.  $200 was initially approved and Bruce asked if the full amount could be reimbursed.  This was approved by the group.  It was also commented about the 6th graders who assisted with Family Reading Night.  This is a good leadership opportunity for the older kids.

·         Erin asked if SOS would like to do the Seed Saver sales again this year.  This was a very easy fund raiser last year and went very well.  Information will be sent out sooner this year so more time is available to review and purchase seeds.  It was discussed to possibly do a drawing for a prize from all students who turn in sales.

Next Meeting—The next meeting was set for Thursday, January 5th at 7:00 p.m. in the elementary school cafeteria.  We encourage all parents to attend and to SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS!

Respectfully submitted,

Theresa Hansen
