Cass County Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program Welcomes Four New Volunteers
The Cass County Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program is proud to announce that four new CASA Volunteers were sworn-in by Judge John Steinheider on Wednesday October 19, 2011. A brief reception was held following the ceremony to wish the new CASA Volunteers well in their advocacy for Cass County’s abused and neglected children. The new CASA volunteers are Leslie Duvall, Denice Eaton-Heim, Karen Muhvic and Marcia Nickels.
Currently there are a total of 49 Cass County children who are under the jurisdiction of the court because of abuse and/or neglect. 32 of those 49 children are being advocated for by only 14 Cass County CASA volunteers. Children range in age from a few months to 18 years old. Many of the children live unsettled lives waiting for their parents to solve the problems that brought the children to the attention of the authorities, and under the courts jurisdiction.
CASA volunteers usually work with one case at a time. They get to know the children well and write reports for the Judge, making recommendations about what would be best for the child. They become a stable, reliable presence in the child’s life during a very difficult time, and advocate for the child to have a safe and permanent home as quickly as possible.
The Cass County CASA program was started in 2005. CASA volunteers are ordinary people doing an extraordinary thing by having an impact on the lives of abused and neglected children. Most volunteers donate about 2 hours per week (or 8 hours a month) and all training is provided. Our next training class will begin in March 2012. If you are interested or want more information, please call or e-mail Angie Neumiller, Program Director at 402-296-9520 or

The Elmwood-Murdock Spirit Squad Fan of the Week is a new program designed to honor those fans who go above and beyond in showing their spirit and/or giving their time and talents to support EM programs. Co-sponsors of the Fan of the Week are Corn Growers State Bank, Heartland Flooring Center, Moss Trucking and Excavating/Moss Scrap Iron and Spohr's Landscaping and Consulting.
We are playing catch up this week with honoring the Fan of the Week in the newsletters. For the week of October 13th we will honor two Fans of the Week, one student and one adult.
Alan, better known as “Bobby” Barnes, is our first Fan of the Week. Bobby, as everyone knows, is consistently the loudest of the student section at every game that he attends. He chimes in on cheers with the Spirit Squad as well as leading some of his own. He frequently dresses up in “spirit wear” whether it is war paint, a dig pink t-shirt, or knight gear. He is positive and enthusiastic and we appreciate his participation and leadership, both at home and away events.
Our second Fan of the Week is Julie Schmale. Julie has been the “woman behind the coach” for 20 years now at Elmwood-Murdock. But she goes beyond what many spouses of coaches do in terms of supporting E-M programs. She plays a very active role in the Booster Club as well as coordinating many of the activities of the Youth Football Leagae, which is one of the most successful youth football programs in our area. She is also active in many other school and community activities, many also which support the youth in our community. She never misses either a football or volleyball game unless forced to choose between the two because they directly conflict. We really appreciate Julie’s positive support of the Spirit Squad and the programming here at E-M. It is volunteers like her that make this a great place to be.
Julie and Bobby both received a limited edition “Fan of the Week t-shirt” and reserved parking spots at the Elmwood-Murdock Volleyball Tournament. Congratulations Julie and Bobby—we think you are Fantastic Fans!

Bobby Barnes shows his team spirit!
For the week of October 20th we honored two Fans of the Week, a husband and wife duo.
On October 20th, we honored two fans of the week, Brent and Robin Kuhlman. Whether coaching, acting as referees, driving the bus, teaching, helping the boosters, or mentoring, the Kuhlmans are a constant presence in our community. They offer support and guidance to all our students including acting as models of sportsmanship and strong values. We appreciate all their encouragement and positivity and honor them as our fans of the week.
Robin and Brent received a limited edition t-shirt and a premium reserved parking spot at last week's home game.

For the week of October 27th we honored two Fans of the Week, a father and son team.
Ken Kunz has served as the voice of the Knights for 12 years. First as a Pirate and then as a Knight, he has been involved in area athletic programs his whole life. Ken's various other handyman and construction skills are often put to work around the community and he also serves on the Elmwood Rescue Squad. We appreciate all that you do and honor you as our first Fan of the Week.
Our student Fan of the Week is Owen Kunz. Owen has followed his father's lead and is frequently behind the scoreboard either keeping score or announcing. Owen is one of the friendliest students in our community and is always glad to converse about farming, area events or our beloved Knights teams. Owen also serves on the Student Council and is active in a wide range of student and community activities.
Ken and Owen received limited edition Fan of the Week t-shirts and will have a special designated parking spot at the next home game, which we all trust will be during the playoffs!!! Congratulations Ken and Owen--you are both super fans!!!

Here is Owen, supporting the team through music!

You may not be able to see him but Kenny is supporting the team in the crow's nest.
