1st Terrace Contest Held
Murdock Man Wins Plow Honors
By Carl Deitemeyer
Omaha World Herald, September 12, 1945
Murdock, Neb. – Ezra Neben, Murdock, won the Cass County plow terrace building contest Wednesday afternoon on the Herman Schweppe farm.
A crowd of more than two thousand persons saw the contest, the first of its kind held in Nebraska.
August Rieke, Murdock was second, with Reuel Harmon, Tabor Ia., and Norman Hull, Palmyra, tying for third
The field of 16 contestants started with their own farm plows and tractors at noon. They were allowed two hours to complete three hundred feet of terrace, a structure to hold the moisture and soil from washing.
The 80-acre field had previously been surveyed and staked. Lots were drawn to see where the contestants would work.
Almost all the contestants used their full two hours.
The three men measuring the practicability of the terraces were Otto Becker and Milo Matthies of the Cass County Conservation District and James Struve of the Seward County Soil Conservation District.
The placings were determined on the basis of capacity, farmability and uniformity of the earthen structure. This covers the water-carrying capacity, as well as smoothness and appearance of the terrace.
Final placing judges wee Irving Walker of the Soil Conservation Service, Lester Larsen, extension engineer, and Albert Ebers, Seward, chairman of the board of supervisors of the Seward district.
Mr. Neben, the winner, said he made the first terrace on his farm in 1930. He had to do the job over as he built it wrong. He has been interested in conservation since then. The winner is a supervisor of the Cass district.
The other contestants were;
Earl H. Nelson, Weston; Grant Neitzel, Murdock; John Meyer, Lincoln; R. A. Cundall, Plattsmouth; Dutch Rikli, Murdock; Norman Hull, Palmyra; Harold Luetchens, Wabash; Loran Vogel, Ashland; August Kupke, Murdock; Hugo Meisinger, Plattsmouth; Herman Wendt, Wabash; Les Wagoner, Louisville, and Floyd Williams, Murdock.
After the contests a “free for all” demonstration on terrace building by all types of equipment was put on by farmers, implement dealers, manufacturers, and commercial operators.
The contest winner received a $50 war bond, second place received a $25 bond, the third place winners split the $10 cash. All other entrants received $7.50 each.
Willard Waldo, Cass County Agent, said that the object of the contest was to show how easy it is to build soil-and-moisture-saving earth structures by using equipment that the average farmer has.

A 30-year-old Lincoln Southeast High graduate was among the dead Saturday when a U.S. Army helicopter was shot down in western Afghanistan.
Sgt. Patrick Hamburger, 30, a member of the Nebraska Army National Guard, was confirmed dead Sunday by his family. He was one of 30 Americans killed when the CH-47 Chinook helicopter reportedly was brought down by enemy fire.
He was also the kind of guy who helped his girlfriend raise her 13-year-old daughter from a previous relationship as well as the couple's own 2-year-old daughter — and planned to propose marriage when he got home, Chris Hamburger said. His girlfriend, Candie Reagan is from rural Elmwood/Murdock. Candie's parents, Merl and Deb Merchant own MEMCO, Inc. in Elmwood. If you haven't seen them in the store lately they have been a little busy.
RIP Sgt. Patrick Hamburger. Your friends and family will miss you dearly.
