The following letter was found in the Detroit MI, public library.  It was
part of an advertisement for Brush Motorcars.  It had been written by Dr.
I.D. Jones from Murdock.  Dr. Jones refers to his 1909 Brush:

Brush Runabout Company:

Please allow me to thank you for the new cylinder head you sent me to
replace the one that has a small leak.  I, however, do not think I will
put it in, as the motor is doing all I wish it to and more.

Ther has not been a horse in my stable this summer and the Brush has done
all my work; besides the pleasure work for the family, which has been no
small amount. I have driven it some 110 miles.  The last two weeks we have
been attending a chautaqua at Ashland, Nebraska, 14 miles away coming back
the same night.  We made the trip in about an hour one way, sometimes
less.

A child five miles in the country took poison last week.  The Brush got me
out there and I was washing the stomach in 20 minutes.  Had I depended on
a team as hot as it was, the baby could not have been saved.  How is that?
I run from 16 to 22 miles wiht one gallon of gasoline according to the
roads.

I have been caught in the rains, but with ropes on the wheels went along
faster than a horse could go.  That blessed little engine has never
stopped for me on the road.  I have never had to put on any repairs and it
has not cost me a penny for repairs.  All that has ever been done to it is
to tighten the brake rods and the chains.

I think I can honestly say that it is as much better than the horse is
better than going on foot.

I wish also to thank you fellows for making that frame the way that you
do, using those half-inch bolts in it, and for riveting them down.  It is
the machine I ever saw.  I don't believe the devil could break the damn
thing.

I hit the shed so hard one time with it one day, raised it off the
foundation.
There are other nice things about that I could say about it but time
forbids.  I remain.

Yours Very Truly,

Dr. I.D. Jones
Murdock, Cass Co., Nebr.

Col. Tom Brewer Takes on Tomorrow's Hope

Tomorrow's Hope is an orphanage in Kabul, Afghanistan.  It is the home to 27 Afghan children. Col. Tom Brewer from Murdock is working in Afhanistan  as project manager for the U.S.Embassy's Border Management Task Force.  Col. Brewer has served more than 30 years in the Nebraska National Guard and is currently in the Army Reserves.  He heard about the orphanage from a co-worker.  Her husband and his mother have a foundation that helps poor Afghan children.  They are trying to build a new facility for Tomorrow's Hope, but it will take time to raise the $250,000 needed to build it.

Brewer got involved and is using his contacts to get support for the orphanage.  Not only is he tapping the contracting companies but he also recruited the Nebraska National Guard's 1-134th Cavalry Squadron at Camp Phoenix in Kabul.  These Nebraskans looked through all the items donated from back home and were able to give clothing, shoes, bedding, toys, and school supplies.  Col. Brewer and other members of the Border Management Task Force spent their day off delivering the goods.  The candy helped them make new friends.

Col. Brewer will be back in the Murdock area soon to attend the graduation of his daughter, Kalee.  If you see him around be sure to thank him for all he has done for us and for the world.

Lofte Receives Two Awards at Regional Competition

The Lofte Community Theatre of Manley, NE was one of two Nebraska arts organizations recently selected to represent the state at the AACT Regional play competition held in Kansas.  Players from the Lofte performed a one hour cutting from "Leaving Iowa," a comedy by Tim Clue & Spike Manton that revolves around one man's memories of childhood family vacations.

In all, there were ten entries from the states of Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, North and South Dakota, Minnesota and Missouri.  The competition took place at the Salina Community Theatre April 28-May 1.  At the end of the competition, the Lofte took home two prestigious awards; "Best Costumes," and actor Larry Bauers of Louisville was awarded, "Best Supporting Actor."  Beatrice's Community Players were recognized in the category of "Best Sound."  The Lofte is a non-profit organization and was able to attend the competition thanks to generous donations from the general public as well as a grant from the Nebraska Arts Council.

Artistic Director Kevin Colbert was extremely proud of the cast's performance.  He also noted that the winner of the competition, "Wiley and the Hairy Man," from a theater in Cloquet, Minnesota was directed by Cheryl Kramer-Milder (formerly Callahan).  Cheryl is a Lofte Community Theatre alumni who performed in many of their productions from 1978-1981.  The Minnesota team will now advance to the national AACT competition being held in Rochester, NY.

The full-length version of "Leaving Iowa," will open the Lofte's 2011 season.  Performances will run May 28-June 12.  Tickets are $17 and can be purchased online at www.Lofte.com or by calling the Lofte box office (402) 234-2553.

Request for Information:

Hello,
I’m writing because I’m making a trip back to Nebraska later this summer. I live in Las Vegs, NV. now, but I was born in Lincoln, and lived for a few years in Murdock.
I graduated in 1970, and in my class there was a boy named Tom Rosencrans.  As I remember it, his dad ran a store in South Bend.
I was only in SB a very few times, and don’t remember much about it.
We moved to Vegas right after my graduation, and I’ve only been back once, and was only in Lincoln and Murdock.  When I come back this summer, I want to drive around  and see more of the towns we used to go to when I lived there as a kid.
I’ve found pictures of an old store, but don’t know if that was the one that Tom’s dad ran or not.
Do you know if it is, and do you have any info on what happened to the family?
I do appreciate any information you may have, and thank you so very much for your time.
Very Cordially yours,
Janie Apodaca (Knapp)

If you know any information for Janie please let me know!  I will pass it on to her.  Email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
