New Switchboard in Operation

Nov. 28, 1951

The Murdock telephone exchange is now being operated through another and larger automatic switching unit according to Robert Humiston, manager of the Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph Company.  The new switchboard was placed in service Wednesday morning, Nov. 28 about 10 o’clock, but not many subscribers were aware of the transfer because interruption in service was of such short duration.  The change to the new equipment required only a few seconds.

Mr. Humiston said the new switchboard was made necessary by the increasing demand for local service during the past ten years which finally brought the load on the old switchboard to its full capacity of 80 lines.  At the time this board was installed in 1936 it was considered large enough to take care of any predictable growth.  Its replacement became necessary when it was apparent that every available line would soon be in use.  The new board is equipped to handle 100 lines which will insure adequate facilities for a healthy growth in Murodck’s future.

The two boards are of the same manufacture, but of different types which makes it necessary to change the numbers of 37 Murdock subscribers and to substitute the prefix “7” for “4” when dialing subscribers on the Elmwood exchange.  The new numbering scheme is necessary in order to balance the load on the equipment and to provide facilities for expansion.

This is what the sky south of Murdock looked like Sunday night.  There was a little rain but mostly wind and lightning!
