E-M KNIGHTS DO IT AGAIN!
Elmwood-Murdock finishes second in conference volleyball tournament
Elmwood-Murdock stormed all the way to the finals of the East Central Nebraska Conference Volleyball Tournament during a second-place run in the annual event this past weekend.
The sixth-seeded Knights upset third-seeded Johnson County Central 22-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18, 15-11 Thursday night and then defeated second-seeded Malcolm 25-21, 25-21, 19-25, 27-25 in the semifinals Saturday morning. Elmwood-Murdock received silver medals after Palmyra won the championship match 25-22, 25-10, 19-25, 25-23.
E-M head coach Pete Vavak said he was pleased with the way the team performed during the ECNC event. Elmwood-Murdock (11-12) had lost to JCC in two games and to Malcolm in three games earlier this season.
“We had a good tournament,” Vavak said. “We played good competition and won three conference games before falling in the finals. We are on a road to getting better. We passed better and played team defense.”
E-M junior Megan Schmale led the Knights with 35 kills and a .539 hitting percentage over the three matches. She also had 38 digs, 10 ace blocks, five service aces and a .919 serving percentage.
Nikki Novak had a team-high 43 digs with seven ace blocks and six kills. She also went 29-for-29 in the serving department. Erika Stubbendeck had 22 kills with five ace blocks and Cherisa Behrends collected six aces and 39 digs. Christy Laughlin made 33 digs and two aces and Erin Dwyer had 53 assists and 17 digs.
Elmwood-Murdock had a team serving percentage of .897 with 17 aces and posted a team hitting percentage of .402 with only 27 attack errors during the tournament. The Knights also made 24 ace blocks, 21 floor saves and 113 serve receptions.
