Dave Stock Named Omaha World Herald's

Master Conservationist Award

Dave Stock, a Murdock seed producer and marketer, has received the Omaha World Herald's Master Conservationist award.

The award was presented Monday at the annual conference of the Nebraska Association of Resources Districts in Kearney.

Stock was nominated by the Lower Platte South Natural Resources District.

Since he and his wife, Margaret, harvested their first crop of Nebraska 28 Switchgrass in 1956, Stock Seed Farms has grown to become a producer and worldwide distributor of prairie grass and wildflower seed.

Today, Stock Seed Farms catalog is more than 30 pages long and features hundreds of grass and wildflower seed varieties and mixes used for wildlife habitat, filter strips, drought hardy lawns, erosion prevention, butterfly gardens, living snow fences and more.

Records of conservation improvements to the farm's 1,500 acres date to the 1940s and have included about 13 miles of terraces, 4,500 feet of underground outlet tile and 3.7 acres of waterways benefiting 124 acres.

"Dave Stock's strict adherence to crop rotation and no-till methods, along with his willingness to share his knowledge of the land and his operation were also key components in our nomination," NRD spokesman Mike Mascoe said in a news release.

The farm often serves as a training site for ag groups, and it sets aside space each year for University of Nebraska research.

“Unnecessary Farce” Is a Necessary Experience

Manley, NE [September 30, 2010]- On October 15, the Lofte Community Theatre in Manley will continue its tradition of fast-paced comedy productions by opening Paul Slade’s hilarious “Unnecessary Farce.”

Written in 2002, the script is modern and very witty. The story takes place in two adjoining hotel rooms. In one room, two rookie cops prepare to bust their town’s mayor for embezzlement. With the help of a love-starved woman accountant and a video camera, they set-up a sting in the adjoining room. However, their simple plan soon goes haywire. The accountant keeps taking off her clothes. The mayor’s security guard is overly protective. A mysterious Scottish hitman appears, but is brogue is so thick no one can understand his instructions.

The production is directed by Kevin Colbert of Weeping Water. The colorful ensemble cast includes Kyle Lorenz of Lincoln, Anne Pope of Eagle, Anna Strobel and Ken Patry of Omaha, Kevin and Dawn Holdorf of Manley and Joshua Smith of La Vista.

Performance dates are October 15-17, 22-24 and 28-31. Curtain times are 7:30pm on Thursday-Saturday and 2pm matinees on Sundays. General admission tickets are $16. Reservations can be made by calling the Lofte ticket office at (402) 234-2553.

Shouldn't Invite to Your Wedding

Greenblatt & Seay's next Schoolhouse Performance Series will feature "Wedding Music You Should and Shouldn't Invite to Your Wedding". This event will take place on Sunday, November 14, at 2:30 PM, downstairs in the Old Avoca, Nebraska Schoolhouse.

Greenblatt & Seay and a small ensemble of Schoolhouse Music Students will share some wedding classics by Handel, Pachelbel, Mendelssohn, etc. The performance will also feature some songs that should never be played at weddings (i.e. "Beware Young Ladies", "The Mother-in-Law Song", "Hit the Road, Jack", etc.). The concert will be followed by light refreshments, and a chance to chat and jam with the performers.

Avoca is in southern Cass County, Nebraska, on the 13 C Spur, one mile south of Highway 34. Admission is $5.00 for adults, and $1.00 for children and students. The historic Old Avoca Schoolhouse was built in 1925, and has been the home of the Schoolhouse Performance Series since 1990. Music lessons, workshops, fiddle camps, and field trips are offered by Schoolhouse residents, Greenblatt & Seay, and are available by appointment.

David Seay, Master Artist with the Nebraska Arts Council, will be presenting a free harmonica workshop on Sunday, October 24, at 1:30 PM, in the Joslyn Museum in Omaha, Nebraska.
