EARLY DISMISSAL FROM SCHOOL ON OCTOBER 2, 2009
On Friday, October 2, 2009, Elmwood-Murdock will be traveling to
Omaha to play Omaha Brownell-Talbot in high school football. The
kick-off for the contest is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. due to the fact Brownell-Talbot
doesn’t have lights at their football field. In order to allow our students and staff to
attend, the elementary school will be dismissed at 1:45 p.m. with the junior-senior
high school dismissed at 2:00 p.m.
Mel Luetchens, a retired minister from Murdock, was quoted
in an article from the Smithsonian Institute about German-POWs
in America. There were 500 POW camps built in America during
the mid-1940’s and several were in the Midwest. Mel remembers
hanging out with his father’s hired hands who were also
German prisoners of war. They lived in a nearby camp and
helped his father put up hay, pick corn, or build fences.
“They were the enemy, of course,” says Luethcens, “But at
that age, you don’t know enough to be afraid.”

"Lie, Cheat and Genuflect" at the Lofte
Manley, NE September 24, 2009 - Grandpa's passed away and it's time
to read the will! The Lofte Community Theatre opens the hilarious comedy,
"Lie, Cheat and Genuflect" on October 9.
The fast-paced farce, written by William Van Zandt and Jane Milmore
revolves around the two "black sheep" of the wealthy Buckle family. Two
bumbling brothers fell out of their grandfather's favor several years ago, and
know they don't have a chance at receiving any money. But, due to a string of
unfortunate bets at the track, they're in debt to a low-rent loan shark. In their
desperation, the brothers cook up a scheme to have one of them pose as their
grandfather's favorite, a female cousin who happens to be a nun! A cast of colorful
characters including a wine-swilling maid and a rookie lawyer add to the mayhem.
Director Kevin Colbert suggests a PG-13 rating for the production, and advises
that some situations may not be suitable for very young children.
Kevin Colbert of Weeping Water plays the scheming brother, Tom, who has all
the answers. Have you ever seen a nun with five o'clock shadow? A Lofte favorite,
Jamion Biesterfeld of Louisville will spend half his time as brother Billy and the other half
as the fictitious "Sister Fernando." Other cast members include Anne Pope and Christina
Tipken of Eagle, Shari Hoelker of Omaha, Dave Hibler and Kevin Holdorf of Manley,
Performance dates are Oct 9-11, 16-18 and 22-25. Curtain times are Thursday-Sautrday
at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2pm. Tickets are $16 and may be purchased by calling the
Lofte box office at (402) 234-2553 or online at www.Lofte.com.
Kevin Colbert and Jamion Biesterfeld will "Lie, Cheat and
Genuflect" to get their Grandfather's fortune!
The Jake Ita Memorial Race on Saturday, October 3rd.will begin
at 5:30. There will be limited seating so come early! There will be
items raffled, t-shirts, and some good racing...just like Jake would
have liked it. Every dollar raised will benefit Victory Junction, a
camp for disabled kids by request of Jake's family.
Take Refuge at Ebenezer United Methodist Church
Murdock
Sunday worship service 9:30 a.m.
Sunday School - 10:30 a.m.
Sunday, October 11th the youth band called "Refuge" will be providing
the music for the worship service. “Refuge” was organized by Dale &
Christine Vanderford a few years ago as a way to have a youth worship
service on Wednesday nights. They developed a praise band, made up
several students from Elmwood-Murdock, and started the Wednesday
night services and occasionally played in various churches in the community
in Lincoln as well. Due to various conflicts they are not able to have the
night service but they have put together a new but smaller band. They’ve
practicing and intend on playing in various churches. The performance at
the Ebenezer United Methodist Church will be their first. They look forward
playing in different venues. They welcome opportunities to make non-church
performances, too.
“Refuge” was named after Psalm 5:11. “But let all who take refuge in You
rejoice; let them shout for joy forever. May You shelter them, and may those
love Your name boast about You.”
Current members of the band are Brandon Luetchens, Shannon Ronhovde,
Staci Ronhovde, Dale and Christine Vanderford. Everyone is welcome to
come and join the worship service at the Murdock United Methodist Church.

Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month Elmwood-Murdock senior,
Alli Kuhlman, daughter of Brent and Robin Kuhlman, Murdock, has organized a fund
raiser for the second year in a row. Shayna Dwyer is helping her plan the fundraiser.
They are selling the shirts and then everyone will wear the shirts to the triangular
volleyball meet with Johnson County Central and Yutan on October 27.
Both varsity and junior varsity girls will be playing. They are selling the shirts
to all teams and fans involved since this is not specific to Elmwood-Murdock…it
is for Breast Cancer Awareness which could affect everyone. Alli designed
the shirts this year with input from the volleyball team. They will be ordered through
ArtFX and can be picked up the night of the game.
In addition to the shirts there will also be a silent auction. They are accepting
donations up until the night of the games. Items that they have collected are
Husker football tickets and cleaning services from the Elmwood-Murdock volleyball
players. The cleaning services offered will be two girls to clean your house, garage,
or yard/garden work for up to four hours at a certain cost. The girls and the bid
winner will discuss the details of the job after the auction. There will also be an
auction that night. The girls hope to have a representative from Breast Cancer
Awareness on hand that night to receive the proceeds.More details to come later!
If you have donations pleas contact Alli or Robin Kuhlman at 402-867-4049

This is the true story of a Garage Owner in the
Southwest New Mexico
He was sick and tired of thugs breaking into his garage shop to steal
tools, etc. So he came up with this idea. He put the word out that he had a
new Mexican Lion that would attack anyone that would break in or climb his fence.
Would-be thieves saw the "Lion" from a distance and fled the scene.
The dog's probably trying to figure out why his head's so hot and his hiney's so cold!
Elmwood Murdock Football Team is Victorious for Homecoming!
Josiah Poole and Alli Kuhlman were selected Homecoming King
and Queen. Their court consisted of Nathan Hohman, Stacy Ronhovde,
Victoria Rosenboom, and Lance Steffen.
Local Treasure Should be Enjoyed
When I was checking out Murdock a couple weeks ago I explored the area
north of Murdock that has a parking lot and a bench. I was curious as to just
what was going on there. Boy, did I find a treasure! Murdock Clean Water
Partnership joined together to clean up groundwater contamination in the area.
That group was composed of community groups and state and federal agencies.
They came up with two innovative solutions. One solution used pumps to take
the contaminated water and spray it over the school’s athletic fields making them
lush and green. The contaminate, carbon tetrachloride, evaporates into the air
making the water harmless. The second solution resulted in the creation of a park
area to be enjoyed by all. They planted more than 2000 trees downstream from
the contaminated area and when the groundwater runs into the streams the trees feed
on the water and that process naturally breaks down the chemicals. This process is
called phytoremediation. They have strategically planted native prairie plants throughout
the area to help capture the water for the trees.
I'm sure that many of you have already strolled around the park and have read the
history of the project on the signs placed throughout the park. The trees are grown up
and provide a nice shady path. The streams make gurgle and bubble making it a relaxing
atmosphere. Benches have been placed throughout to allow you to take a rest and enjoy
the scenic view. I even saw a frog playing in a little lagoon area. The north end has
equipment but just pretend it isn’t there. It doesn’t ruin the park because it reminds you
that there is a purpose for it. Take a few minutes before the snow starts to fly and wander
around the park. You will be amazed. Click here and then select Slideshow if you would
like to see more pictures from my stroll.
