What’s Happening Around Our Community AIN'T

He was just a little boy,
On a week's first day.
Wandering home from Bible school,
And dawdling on the way.

He scuffed his shoes into the grass;
He even found a caterpillar.
He found a fluffy milkweed pod,
And blew out all the 'filler.'

A bird's nest in a tree overhead,
So wisely placed up so high.
Was just another wonder,
That caught his eager eye.

A neighbor watched his zig-zag course,
And hailed him from the lawn;
Asked him where he'd been that day
And what was going on.

"I've been to Bible School  ,"
He said and turned a piece of sod.
He picked up a wiggly worm replying,
"I've learned a lot about God."

"M'm very fine way," the neighbor said,
"for a boy to spend his time.
"If you'll tell me where God is,
I'll give you a brand new dime."

Quick as a flash the answer came!
Nor were his accents faint.
"I'll give you a dollar, Mister,
If you can tell me where God ain't."
Psalm 91: The Angels are watching over you and me.
God Bless.

Be sure to attend Vacation Bible School this week!

Vacation Bible School at Trinity Lutheran Church to be held the week of July 20th from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

This year's National FBLA theme was
"Get the Edge"

Thanks to Annie, Lance, Marcus, and Shannon R. for sending me information on Elmwood-Murdock FBLA going to Nationals!
Marcus and Lance wrote: “This year, the Elmwood-Murdock Future Business Leaders of America competed at the National Leadership Conference in Anaheim California. In all, twenty students qualified to compete at the national level. Among the students were three award winning teams of three students. The award winning teams were: Emerging Business Issues-2nd place, Entrepreneurship-4th place, and E-Business-9th place.During the conference the students were not “all business.” The National Competitors networked with other qualifiers at Huntington Beach and Disney Land before the Conference. During the Conference there was a popular area at the Hilton where the competitors were able to meet known as the Lanai Deck. At this area, Elmwood-Murdock qualifiers were able to kick back and meet other students from across the country. Because of this experience, the qualifiers learned skills not only used in the business world, but also that will help them excel in their lives beyond business.” And here are some photos with captions for Shannon!

Ashley Wood, Nebraska’s State FBLA President opening the first Nebraska meeting at Anaheim the first night we arrived.

Shannon Ronhovde, Erin Andersen, Teresa Fritz, and Lyndsay Hrabik with Mickey during our day at Disneyland as a chapter

The Opening General Session and the Awards Ceremony were both held at the Anaheim Convention Center close by our hotels.

Our chapter had the opportunity to go to Sunset Boulevard, as well as Rodeo Drive which consisted of a lot of name brand stores such as Juicy Couture, Dolce and Gabbana, and a Tiffany’s Jewelry store.

We were also able to do the Hollywood Walk of Fame where we saw many of the star’s “stars” and also the ‘Hollywood Forever Cemetery’ and saw a lot of famous signatures. If you would like, for the stars I have: Regis Philban, Burt Reynolds, Ricky Martin, Julie Andrews, Jack Nicholson (although his has a shadow on it so its not the greatest pic), Antonio Benderas, Britney Spears, Marykate and Ashley Olsen, and Jackie Chan. For signatures I have: William Shatner, Clint Eastwood, Tom Cruise, a kind of diagonal Harry Potter cast J, Johnny Depp, Adam Sandler, Dean Martin, George Clooney, Dick Van Dyke, Bob Hope, and Shirley Temple (I got this one mostly for Jordan ;) if you would show it to her that’d be great! Lol)

Allison Kuhlman, Christy Laughlin, and Shayna Dwyer were in the event called E-Business. They had to give a presentation to make it to finals in which they received 9th place nationwide.

Lyndsay Hrabik, Victoria Rosenboom, and Teresa Fritz were in Emerging Business Issues (EBI). They were given a topic a few months before the convention and had to memorize both a positive and a negative side of their EBI. To present they drew either Positive or Negative to decide which side they would be giving. The group received 2nd place at Nationals.

Marcus Winter, Jon Luetchens, and Griffin Hovorka placed 4th in Entrepreneurship. To make finals they had to take a test and place in the top ten groups. In finals, they were given twenty minutes to develop an impromptu presentation.

And next year’s theme is "Simply the Best"!

Help from Strangers for Marti

Because someone knew someone who knew someone who knew someone who wanted to help someone Marti became the recipient of funds from a raffle. St. Columbkille Shepherds have a fireworks stand every year and during the week they are selling fireworks they also have a raffle to benefit someone who needs help. This year they heard about Marti from a man who drives the delivery truck of fireworks. That man was Ray Mumenthaler, step father to Nicole Folden. Nicole is friends with Kris Ita, Marti's mom. Ray put the Shepherds in touch with Nicole and Kris. Kris gave her permission for them to use Marti's story and away they went! Usually the Shepherds raise between $800-1200 during the raffle. This year they raised $ $2,238.35 for Marti. The winner of the Raffle was Ashley Bailey of Omaha and she received $500 in fireworks. It is just incredible that total strangers would reach out and help someone that they don't even know. Elmwood Murdock is blessed to have so many people who care. Thanks to the Shepherds for taking the time to care and to help Marti.Click below to see the Channel 7 news story about the event.

Helpful Hint
(BUT DO NOT READ IF YOU LIKE telemarketers and junk mail)

CBS Newsman

Tips for Handling Telemarketers
Three Little Words That Work !!

(1) The three little words are: 'Hold On, Please....'
Saying this, while putting down your phone and walking off (instead of hanging-up immediately) would make each telemarketing call so much more time-consuming that boiler room sales would grind to a halt.

Then when you eventually hear the phone company's 'beep-beep-beep' tone, you know it's time to go back and hang up your handset, which has efficiently completed its task.

These three little words will help eliminate telephone soliciting.

(2) Do you ever get those annoying phone calls with no one on the other end?

This is a telemarketing technique where a machine makes phone calls and records the time of day when a person answers the phone.  This technique is used to determine the best time of day for a 'real' sales person to call back and get someone at home.

What you can do after answering, if you notice there is no one there, is to immediately start hitting your # button on the phone, 6 or 7 times, as quickly as possible This confuses the machine that dialed the call and it kicks your number out of their system. Gosh, what a shame not to have your name in their system any longer !!!

(3) Junk Mail Help:
When you get 'ads' enclosed with your phone or utility bill, return these 'ads' with your payment. Let the sending companies throw their own junk mail away.

When you get those 'pre-approved' letters in the mail for everything from credit cards to 2nd mortgages and similar type junk, do not throw away the return envelope.

Most of these come with postage-paid return envelopes, right? It costs them more than the regular 41 cents postage 'IF' and when they receive them back..

It costs them nothing if you throw them away! The postage was around 50 cents before the last increase and it is according to the weight. In that case, why not get rid of some of your other junk mail and put it in these cool little, postage-paid return envelopes.

One of Andy Rooney's (60 minutes) ideas.
Send an ad for your local chimney cleaner to American Express. Send a pizza coupon to Citibank.. If you didn't get anything else that day, then just send them their blank application back!
If you want to remain anonymous, just make sure your name isn't on anything you send them.

You can even send the envelope back empty if you want to just to keep them guessing! It still costs them 41 cents.

The banks and credit card companies are currently getting a lot of their own junk back in the mail, but folks, we need to OVERWHELM them. Let's let them know what it's like to get lots of junk mail, and best of all they're paying for it...Twice!

Let's help keep our postal service busy since they are saying that e-mail is cutting into their business profits, and that's why they need to increase postage costs again You get the idea !

If enough people follow these tips, it will work ---- I have been doing this for years, and I get very little junk mail anymore.

Funny
Finkelstein and Jesus (Too funny)

Jesus was wandering around Jerusalem when He decided that He really needed a new robe.
After looking around for a while, He saw a sign for Finkelstein, the Tailor. So, He went in and made the necessary arrangements to have Finkelstein prepare a new robe for Him. A few days later, when the robe was finished, Jesus tried it on and it was a perfect fit!
He asked how much He owed and Finkelstein brushed him off: 'No, no, no, for the Son of God ? There's no charge! However, may I ask for a small favor? Whenever you give a sermon, perhaps you could just mention that your nice new robe was made by Finkelstein, the Tailor?'
Jesus readily agreed and as promised, extolled the virtues of his Finkelstein robe whenever He spoke to the masses.
A few months later, while Jesus was again walking through Jerusalem , He happened to walk past Finkelstein's shop and noted a huge line of people waiting for Finkelstein's robes.
He pushed his way through the crowd to speak to him and as soon as Finkelstein spotted him he said: 'Jesus, Jesus, look what you've done for my business! Would you consider a partnership?'
'Certainly,' replied Jesus. 'Jesus & Finkelstein it is.'
'Oh, no, no,' said Finkelstein. 'Finkelstein & Jesus. After all, I am the craftsman.' The two of them debated this for some time.

Their discussion was long and spirited, but ultimately fruitful and they finally came up with a mutually acceptable compromise. A few days later, the new sign went up over Finkelstein's shop:
